Life+Coaching

What is Life Coaching?

My nature as a person is team oriented.  I LOVE teamwork, more gets accomplished when everyone works together.  I am successful in life and business because of the people that believe in me, support me, and vice versa.

I love to collaborate and support others in achieving their hopes and dreams.  I invited Sophie Skover to do an interview on Life Coaching.  She is another professional and colleague in the field.  I wanted to give her a little space to share her vision, philosophies, ideas, and her work.  Read the interview below.

Life Coaching may be your answer!

Katie: “Sophie, can you share with the audience your idea of life coaching.”

Sophie: “Life Coaching is a modern method of self-development that works with the conscious mind to help you map out what you want out of life.  Just like in sports, a coach can see the whole game, while the player is making the individual moves.  This dynamic allows for great forward movement and create an action plan of changing what doesn’t work and increasing what does.”

Katie: “What can people expect to work on with a Life Coach?”

Sophie: “Well, life continuously provides us with information and messages.  When we do not listen, the messages often turn into problems.  When we do not face the problems, they can turn into a crisis.  When the crisis is left unresolved, we have chaos all over our lives.  Life Coaching is about learning to live on the level of information and messages and our goal at LSS Harmony is to help you find solutions for your:

  • Life: Set achievable goals and stick to them.
  • Weight: Overcome weight issues, create a healthy eating plan, and conquer irrational food cravings
  • Relationships: Create the relationships you want, transform the ones you don’t.
  • Loss: Heal from loss and gracefully rebuild your life.
  • Clutter: Organize your space to eliminate clutter, chaos and stress.
  • Social Life: Overcome social nervousness and practice new techniques in social settings.
  • Negativity: Overcome anger, fear, and worry by learning to transform limited thinking habits.”

Katie: “Wow, Sophie that is great you cover a lot of areas.”

Sophie: “Katie, LSS Harmony also conducts 3 Corporate Programs as well:

  • Professional Development Workshop
  • Leadership Workshop
  • Team Building Program”

Katie: “Sophie, I would love to hear your opinion on what you see the difference between therapy and life coaching is?”

Sophie: “The way I like to describe the difference between these two self-development approaches is that therapy helps you look back on your life and answers the question how did I get to where I am today.  While, life coaching has you look forward and answers the question, where do I want to go.  Both modalities are beneficial and have a very important place in people’s healing journeys.”

Katie: “Interesting perspective AND post modern therapists, marriage and family therapists in particular, are trained very much as you describe a life coach.  Therapists who utilize solution-focused brief therapy focus on the present and future utilizing clients resources and strengths helping them achieve what they want.”

Katie: “Sophie is located in the West Palm Beach area and she offers a complimentary first session, so you can get a feel for her work and discover if it is a good fit for you.”

Katie: “I wanted to thank-you Sophie for taking the time to share with us about what you do!  You can find out more about Sophie below.”

Can+a+therapist+help+me-

I Was Told to Leap…

So there I am… standing at the place of decision, fear, and ambiguity.  On this side is certainty, comfort and familiarity.  Sound familiar?

In 2012, I kept getting this message…

Can+a+therapist+help+me-

I finally chose to listen, and I was scared.

The decision I was faced with was leaving a company I was employed at for 11 years to pursue my own business, be my own boss, and fulfill my own dreams.

I walked to the edge, looked out in the fog and didn’t see the net.  I pulled back, hesitant and wanted to just go back to what I knew.  I had to push myself.  In order to hold myself accountable to my goal I started telling people I was leaving.  On the outside I declared it with such certainty, on the inside I was filled with such doubt.

I still wasn’t fully ready for the decision I was making but knew it was time.  For about 6 weeks I had trouble breathing, convinced it was from a cold I just couldn’t kick I headed to the doctor.  After a regimen of medicine and no results, I was clear it was my anxiety about this HUGE life decision .

On November 30th 2012, I walked to the edge, took a deep breath, and leapt!   For several months my monkey mind reeked havoc on my decision.  Convinced at times that the net wasn’t there, I wanted to pack it all in and go back to being someone’s employee, but I pushed through.

I just hit a huge milestone in my goals and dreams.  After 8 months of leaving my job I have TRIPLED my weekly income.  To give you a perspective, it took me 11 years, and I didn’t even double my income being an employee.

I share this personal story with you because my goal is helping people fulfill on their dreams.  I look forward to helping you pursue what is important to you!

Give us a call 954-401-9011 or drop us an email Katie@familyandcouplescounseling.com  to start the process… don’t wait 11 years when it can take 8 months.

Do+Not+Disturb+Rocks

A Therapist’s Favorite Question…

So what is a therapist’s favorite question?

One of my favorite questions is, “what do you mean by that?” It doesn’t go over so fabulously in relationships. After I ask that question the response I usually receive is “don’t therapize me”. In fact, “what do you mean by that?” is an important and valuable question in communication!  It allows the speaker to clearly respond to what he/she means rather than an interpretation of the listener.

I think this picture depicts EXACTLY that question. I mean what EXACTLY does “Do Not Disturb Rocks” mean?  One can deduce many meanings from this sign, such as:

Do+Not+Disturb+Rocks

  1. Perhaps the rocks are sleeping?
  2. Perhaps they are special rocks that should not be touched.
  3. Perhaps if you disturb them, they might bite…
  4. Perhaps if they are moved a giant hole will emerge and swallow you whole.

Good communication requires many things.  Most often people think that communication is in the speaking; it is even more important in the listening of others.  Have you ever really listened to someone?  What I mean by that is, have you turned off the ever running commentary in your head while someone is speaking, long enough to hear precisely what they are saying?  We often listen through filters of our own experience, what we deem is right and wrong, judgments, perceptions, etc.  Most of the time we aren’t listening at all.  We are thinking about what we are going to respond back with.  Here in lies the problem in communication.

What would it be like for your spouse, girlfriend/boyfriend, partner, friend… to have your full attention with no pre-conceived notions about what he/she is saying?  Nice, right!

Well if you are curious how Lemieux Solutions Unlimited, LLC can help you turn down the commentary in your head long enough to have a different conversation with the person in front of you, CONTACT US to see how we can help! In the meantime, using “what do you mean by that,” is really helpful!

The Best Kind of Therapy for…

I started off writing this blog as, “The Best Kind of Therapy for Children” and then I realized this could be a great therapy for anyone.

I arrived at my office today and parked in the back parking lot as I usually do.  As I stepped out of my car and gathered my bags to head up and see clients, over the concrete wall I heard, “One, Two, Three… Ready or not here I come.” Either I have been inside for way too many years OR kids really aren’t playing nostalgic games like “hide-and-seek”, tag, or any other games we played when we were kids.  Playing these games is more than just nostalgic.  Kids playing outside have several if not more benefits: they breathe clean and fresh air, they get physical and run around, they get creative making up rules to games, the negotiate and work things out – “that is not how we play it…”, and most important they unplug from the TV, computer, video games, etc.

So whether you are an adult or child why not gather up the neighborhood and play some good ole fashion “hide-and-seek” , tag, “Kick the Can”, “Capture the Flag”, or one of my favorites we used to play with my mom, “What Time is it Mr. Fox?”

Preventing Sexual Abuse in Children

How do we go about preventing childhood abuse, bullying, and dangers children face?

If you ask me, I think Cherie Benjoseph, LCSW and Sally Berenzweig, MEd, MA, Founders of Kidsafe Foundation are on to a GREAT concept.

I was able to attend Cherie’s training on April 17th, 2013. I was able to easily utilize the books we got at the workshop with the children I work with and their parents. It helped them create a common language around safety.

preventing+child+abuse *If you look closely I am in the second row, second from the right.

They are strong in their message that childhood abuse can be reduced by teaching and educating kids, parents, and child caring providers i.e. schools, Child Protective Services, teachers, therapists, foster caring agencies, camp counselors, etc to be “KidSafe”.

Their Mission: “Our mission is to bring Education programs and materials to children and adults to Prevent Child Abuse, Bullying and Internet Safety Dangers. Our goal is to give children a voice and  empower adults to be the first line of defense in their child’s safety.

Their concepts, ideas, techniques, and teachings are simple, palatable and easy to implement. Cherie is a great trainer – funny, charismatic, and serious about her message.

Their trainings, classes and workshops teach children and the adults who love and care for them to have clear specific rules, like “check first”. It also teaches kids to empower themselves around secret keeping, listening to their safety voice, and identifying their circle of safe adults.

Their training is a need for children and families across all cultures.

Family Counseling & “Collaborative Divorce”???

Are you asking yourself the same thing…

What is a “Collaborative Divorce”?  Does it almost seem unheard of?  Well it is possible.

Look around, you probably know at least one person (probably many more) who has gone through a divorce. That person may have started out with a family similar to yours (husband, wife, kids, house). Just because this is so does not mean that your divorce will look like theirs. Maybe the person you know had a highly contentious, litigated divorce.  Maybe this person is still in court, fighting his or her former spouse, long after the divorce was officially “finished”. Maybe this person’s children are really suffering because mom and dad cannot get it together and learn to co-parent. Maybe this is not how you want your divorce (and your post-divorce family) to look.  Maybe you want a different way to go through this process. There is a different way, it is called Collaborative Divorce.

Hopefully, you have lots of support as you go through this difficult time, family, friends, co-workers, a therapist.  Maybe many of these people are telling you how you should go about your divorce (“take him to the cleaners” “cut her off at the knees” “keep the kids from him” “threaten to take the kids from her”). Maybe this is not how you want to write your divorce.  Maybe this is not how you want to go about this process.  Maybe you want to get beyond your anger, hurt, mistrust, feelings of deception and bitterness towards your spouse and move on with your life. Maybe you want your kids to have the freedom to love both of their parents.  Maybe you want to take away the good things from your marriage and learn from the not-so-good things.  If so, write your own divorce.  Do what is right for you and your family.  Don’t listen to those who tell you how it should be.  You can find out more about having a “Collaborative Divorce” by contacting Carolann Mazza, Esq., 954-527-4604 or CLICK HERE to visit her website and watch a video as Carolann talks about “Collaborative Law” to see if “Collaborative Divorce” it is a right fit for you.

Parental Alienation – When Having a Marriage and Family Therapist is Important

The National Parents Organization put out a great article on a change coming out in the DSM V – Diagnostic Statics Manual for mental health diagnoses and disorders. According to the article in the new DSM V it addresses Parental Alienation.

This is a huge advance in the world of systems. Parental Alienation is being defined as the impact that parents have on their children by alienating them from the other parent. This most often happens in bitter divorces, when one parent has strong resentment towards the other, etc.

Parental Alienation according to the article is “Parental alienation is a mental condition in which a child  usually one whose parents are engaged in a high-conflict separation or divorce allies strongly with one parent and refuses without good cause to have a relationship with the other parent. This process takes place when a parent or caregiver encourages the child rejection of the other parent. Parental alienation is driven by the false belief that the rejected parent is evil, dangerous, or not worthy of affection.”

You can read more by going to the article.

If this has occurred to you or someone you know getting a Marriage and Family Therapist or a therapist skilled in family therapy or systems therapy can be very beneficial. Also involving the legal system to court order therapy requiring both parents to participate can be beneficial as well. If you have further questions on how we can be helpful to you please contact us 954-401-9011.
